In
this post I will be talking about a very important topic, doing what you love. My
post revolves around a TED talk. For
those of you who have never heard of TED, TED is a nonprofit organization that
brings together three worlds: Technology, Entertainment and Design devoted to
ideas worth spreading. I will delve into why doing what you love is so
important not only in the entertainment industry, but in every single industry.
In this video, entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk, addresses members of the audience that are faced with self-doubt. Gary’s ‘claim to fame’ is his Wine Library TV, which utilizes a spinoff of both wine and social media. Gary’s approach to the audience is very direct and he uses some profane language throughout, but I think that helped to capture the audience’s attention, because it captured mine. Gary was able to inspire the audience by not using conventional presentation styles. He had a lot of energy and was able to convey that to the audience during his speech.
From
the talk Gary expressed that often times when people meet him they think of him
as a “loud obnoxious east coast guy.” He overcame this adversity by winning
through his actions and showing people that he genuinely cares about them. Gary
said his gift is also his curse. Gary then described how he took over his family
business where they made a couple million dollars a year and over a 7-year
period he built it into a $50 million dollar company.
Throughout
the presentation Gary built trust with the audience by sharing valuable
information and real life experiences, while showing that he genuinely cared. He
shared the experience of how he used to work from 7am to 10pm daily, in his
liquor store, for seven years straight, which helped him build up his equity to
start his business and was advising that we do the same. His keyword was ‘Hustle’.
He also shared a valuable concept, that legacy is greater than currency.
Before
I watched this speech I had no idea who Gary Vaynerchuck was, but he was able
to captivate me enough to remember who he is and some of the morals he
supports. This topic, doing what you love, helped to reestablish that you live
only once so why not do something you love and are passionate about while you
are alive? It also made me ask myself if what I am doing in life is my passion
and I know without a doubt that it is. So until next time, think about what
makes you happy in life and if you’re not doing it, just remember it’s never to
late to change courses because once you find your passion your job will then
become your career.
