This is my first blog post and today I will be discussing
what music production software I like to use. Before I get started I would just
like to clear up any possible confusion in regards to what music production is.
Music production in its simplest form is creating or producing anything that
has to do with music. Obviously there are different levels of music production
and usually what determines those levels is money, but the basic principle
remains the same.
There are tons of music production software out there that are
really good, but also pretty expensive. The first is a program I’m sure many of
you have heard of, Pro Tools. Pro
Tools is the industry standard for music production and is my DAW (Digital
Audio Workstation) of choice. I mainly prefer to use Pro Tools for tracking or
recording vocals, but it can also be used to make instrumentals. It goes for
about $700 on Sweetwater, which is a
great place to buy practically everything music wise. Where I bought my copy of
Pro Tools however was from Studica
(a student discount website) and is also another great asset for music
producers attending college. Understandably, this is a lot of money to spend on
one piece of software, but if you are serious about what you are doing, this is
the program for you.
Another program I live for is, Fruity Loops. Fruity Loops is another great music production
software that I use almost exclusively to make ‘beats’. Despite many people
overlooking it, for reasons unknown to me, it is a great program to use when
producing and is very easy to understand and operate.
The final software I will talk about is the first recording
software I ever used, Acoustica Mixcraft.
If you are working with a bigger budget I would still strongly suggest you buy
Pro Tools, but if not I would definitely recommend Mixcraft. It goes for about $75
and is a great introductory program for new music producers. In some of my later
posts I will discuss some equipment that I like and use and some techniques I
use myself when producing music.
